چکیده
The National Cancer Institute is supporting a study of vaginal cancer and other noncancemous genital tract innegu lamitiesin offspring of mothers who received synthetic estro gens during pregnancy. The study, entitled The DESAD Project (DES7 and Adenosis), seeks to provide answers concerning the risk to exposed offspring born after 1940 of developing cancer on other medically important conditions, including vaginal adenosis and cervical abnormalities. Each of 4 participating institutions8 is identifying 500 or more subjects with documented in utero exposure. Exposed daughters of different ages are being examined and fol lowod to determine incidence and natural history of vaginal adenosis and other irregularities.

Background: There is an important evidence that prolonged exposure to several endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). These are persistent materials with unique environmental properties such as intake of contaminated food, water and air, irrespective of proximity to industries, which are suspected to have endocrine disrupting activities. Perflurooctanoic acid (PFOA) and diethylstilbestrol (EDCs)...

The association of intrauterine exposure to diethylstilbestrol (DES) and the subsequent development of reproductive tract abnormalities in young women has been well documented. Although the incidence of vaginal adenocarcinoma was low in the exposed population, vaginal adenosis, a nonmalignant abnormality, was quite common. In order to study the pathogenesis of adenocarcinoma and to determine th...

Primary clear cell adenocarcinomas most commonly involve the genitourinary system, including the vagina. Previously, primary clear cell adenocarcinomas of the vagina have been discussed within the context of prenatal exposure to diethylstilbestrol. Due to its widely proven role in the development of this carcinoma, administration of diethylstilbestrol is prohibited. We present two cases of non-...
متن کاملEndocrine Disruptors: Human Disease and Disease Models
Breast cancer strikes one out of eight women in Switzerland. The increase in breast cancer incidence over the past 70 years parallels an enormous increase of man-made, persistent chemicals in our environment; some of which have endocrine-disrupting properties in wildlife and/or in animal models. Epidemiological evidence is strong that a woman’s risk to get breast cancer is linked to her reprodu...
